This post won't be too terribly entertaining since I spent the whole day basically on an airplane, train or subway, but there were some entertaining points.
My wonderful ride picked me up promptly at 9:30 Friday morning to head to the airport in OKC. I was a bit apprehensive about this trip because it was my first time flying and really traveling completely on my own. I'm terribly introverted (I fake extroverted quite well though) and being alone really charges my batteries, so I knew this trip was something that I needed with as much as I do with other people when I'm in Norman.
He drops me off at the airport around 10:00 before my flight at 11:30. I had checked in and paid for my bag online the night before (what did we do before the Internet, really?) so that was a breeze. I packed pretty lightly for me (though Chris would argue that since he put my suitcase in the truck!). I had one suitcase to check, medium sized, and a carry on, specifically my croc bag that I haul around all the time and have to explain that it is NOT a purse. It was perfect for my computer and book (though I decided that I needed the new Stephen King book, 11/22/63, which when I purchased at Barnes and Noble I realized that it was 849 pages and hard back, oh well). I get through security no problem and had to take a picture of this because I love the wording:
I like the wording under number 3: "Thank you for 'participating' in security." As if we have a choice? Anywho, I make it through security with no problems and head to my gate. I was flying United and was there really early. I take a seat and wait on the plane to get to the gate. They start calling passengers and they have two carpets for people to walk through: a blue one and a red one. The guy next to me, as they are calling for the "priority" passengers said "well that will make you feel insignificant, huh?"
I get to my window seat and get cozy for the three hour flight. The guy from the terminal was in the row ahead of me along with a mom, her teenage son, and her mother. The guy asks the three of them if they want some cookies he had from Boston. The grandma asks if there's anything in them, like pot. I thought the mom was going to die. It was pretty funny.
Overall the flight was fine, and the book is excellent. We landed at Dulles in one of the roughest landings I've ever had (a theme for this trip apparently). We got off the plane via steps and I have to admit it was pretty cold in DC that afternoon. I made it into the terminal and had a text from Orbitz (I guess they are good for something) that my next flight was delayed. When I checked the board, however, it was on time. I got something to eat, checked voicemails and checked in with everyone that I had survived my first solo flight. Then I hunted down an electric outlet to charge my dying phone (another theme). I chit chatted during the layover and boarded the next flight around 5:00.
On this flight I had an aisle seat next to a not so pleasant man. We ended up delayed while on the plane due to high winds. It was only twenty minutes, yet he was flipping off the window at the announcement. We finally made it to the air and the flight was short. We landed in Newark, which again was extremely bumpy, but it was amazing seeing the lights of the New York skyline as we landed.
Whitney sent me incredibly wonderful directions ahead of time and I had no problems getting myself around the airport because of it. A few years back, 2005 to be exact, my best friend, myself and three of her cousins went to NYC. Well I learned that when you have someone who lives in NYC telling you the best way to get around it is much easier. I still wonder how the five of us survived that trip. Especially before invent of cell phone GPS.
I make it through baggage claim and onto the train into Manhattan. (Much easier than whatever we did that involved a Newark city bus before!) I got off at Penn Station, hoped on the subway and made it to the 6 train. Apparently there had been a "incident" therefore the trains were way behind. By this point it is around 8:00 and I'm slightly exhausted and ready to be done with the traveling thing. Finally the train arrives and I hop on and make it to Lexington and 77th. Again, Whitney's directions were excellent and I got off lugging my huge (I swear it got bigger while en route from OKC to Newark) suitcase. At the subway station there are a few steps, by a few I mean something like 8 million (yes this is an exaggeration), however there was a very nice man and his wife and he carried my suitcase up all the stairs to the street. This is just the first in my campaign that New Yorkers are not like most people think they are. So far I have met some of the kindest people on this trip.
I head to Whitney's, which was a bit of a walk, but it was a nice evening. I get to the brownstone and she buzzes me in. I was not anticipating the two flights of stairs about as wide as my suitcase. I made it up, but that part was not exactly fun. I am seeing a cab ride back to Penn Station in my future Friday!
We chatted for a bit and then I realized that I had not checked in with the four people expecting me to check in with them when I got to her apartment. As it took me forever to get uptown I think they were probably mildly concerned by my lack of communication. I will give everyone credit, however, they have given me time to get places without freaking out and calling 75 times (though I'm sure they have wanted to!). I made my phone calls and texts and we talked for a few hours before going to bed.
I set my alarm for 7:00 the next morning so I could get up and wash and straighten my hair (I quickly regretted that decision) and make it back to Penn Station to leave for DC.

Promise
I promised myself I would blog while I was in New York. Well I left Friday, it is now Tuesday and you can see I am just now getting on Blogger. Oh well. It has been a jam packed five days and my feet have forced me to slow down for a bit, so I'm going to try to catch up.
So why did I come to NYC? Well I love it, that's the start. Plus I just needed to get out of Norman to be honest. For quite awhile I was contemplating moving here and there is still a part of me that wants to, though I feel like Norman is where I need to be for the time being. I do love it here and I cannot really express how comfortable I feel as soon as I get here, which I find completely random seeing that it is SO very different from where I spend the majority of my time. I finally came to the conclusion that if I'm going to be single right now I'm going to enjoy it. I have the ability to travel, so I am. I am extremely introverted, so traveling alone suits me quite nicely. Plus I have a WONDERFUL friend from college who is letting me sleep on an inflatable mattress in her living room! So NYC was a good fit.
After I got all the plans made and airfare booked I looked at my itinerary and realized that I was flying through DC. I have a good friend that lives there and the initial plan was to meet up for coffee during my layover, which then turned into staying in DC for a night. The beginning of that plan was to skip my Dulles to Newark flight, stay in DC for a night, see the sights and ride into Manhattan on Saturday, well Orbitz had another thought on that. Did you know that if you miss your connecting flight Orbitz apparently assumes you are dead and cancels the rest of your flight? Yeah, me either, however I do now. So needless to say when I got that lovely news the week before my trip leaving me in tears on my lunch break other plans had to be made.
As ridiculous as it is the plan then became as such: fly out of OKC around 11:30 Friday morning, arrive in DC (Dulles) around 3:00 in the afternoon, hang out there until my flight to Newark at 5:20, head to Manhattan to Whitney's, stay Friday night in NYC then get up early Saturday and head back to DC, stay the night and then head back to NYC Sunday afternoon. Are you tired from reading that? Well I'm tired from living it!
Now that we have the game plan I will tell how I made it to where I am now. More to come!

I have been a little MIA in a lot of arenas of my life lately, but especially with the blog. I just haven't had anything to say because I haven't been able to get my brain to wrap around a lot of things going on in my life. I won't go there on all the things I am questioning right now, but I do want to take a minute to talk about facebook.
I love facebook, for real, but it frustrates the crap out of me. I am not what one would call a private person, by any stretch of the imagination. Frankly if you will hold still there is a good chance I will tell you my life story, however I think facebook is maybe pushing the realm of privacy. No I'm not talking about the site itself, though plenty of people will argue that the "new" facebook greatly diminishes privacy with that annoying little box in the upper right hand corner. I'm talking about what people post on facebook.
Now I might have a skewed view on this because, seriously, I am friends with EVERYONE on facebook. I do not discriminate. If I know who you are and have talked to you once then I'm all over being friends. I have a few friends that I have made exclusively through facebook (though that is a rarity and only happens in extremely special circumstances). I don't post a whole lot of stuff on facebook. If I have a general gripe or I'm cheering for a certain football team then I post things. I post pictures to share with friends that are not around all the time. For the most part facebook is a huge address book, for lack of a better term. It is how I keep up with birthdays (totally been slacking in that field lately, so if you've had a birthday in the last month here goes: HAPPY BIRTHDAY) and how I keep up with friends from different stages of my life. Just today I had a friend post a comment about the new Footloose movie coming out and how it reminded her of a particular time during high school, she tagged all the people that were a part of that time. It made me smile and nostalgic. This is what I use facebook for. I also use it to keep up with people's growing children, as an easy way to communicate with different groups, and a fast way to send out event invitations.
What I have noticed recently with some of the people that I am "friends" with on facebook (yes I use that term pretty loosely) is that they post EVERYTHING. I'm talking intimate details of their lives. Because of these details drama tends to get started (this is why I do not post much). Things are blown way out of proportion and people's feelings get hurt. People overreact to things that are posted, whether in a way that is meant to be helpful or in a way that is destructive. It is almost as if people are needing an outlet for attention.
On Pinterest (new OBSESSION) I saw this:
I am truly starting to believe this about some people that show up on my newsfeed. Now I realize most of you that read this get click on it through facebook, so you're wondering if I'm talking about you. Odds are pretty good that I'm not, however you might want to take a moment to think about what you post. Unless you only have your immediate family and closest friends on facebook then people probably don't need/want/care to know the intimate details of what is going on. Share the extreme highlights and call it a day.
Like I said I love facebook. I think it is an excellent tool, especially for non profits and small businesses because EVERYONE is on facebook. I love Twitter too. In fact I love Twitter a whole lot more than I love facebook. A blog I follow pretty much nailed it on the head: facebook makes me hate people I used to know and Twitter makes me love people I've never met. Maybe only having 140 characters makes us think about what we really want to say and forces us from putting in all the gory details of our every day lives. Granted on Twitter I suppose your feed could look like this:
All of this ranting being said think of this as a PSA for the day. The end.

Writer's Block Challenge: Day 2
Your Opinion on Cheating
Well, well, well this is a fun one. My opinion on cheating. If you don't want to know the answer to this one than quit reading now. If you don't like what you read, don't say you weren't warned.
Now, onto the fun part. Let's start off by saying that though I have had opportunity I have never cheated on someone when I was in a committed relationship with them. Let us also say that I have been cheated on many, many, many times. I'm not really sure what that says about me to be honest. I'm sure we could mention something about loyalty and probably naivety or stupidity.
At any rate this being said I have some experience in the role of the person who is cheated on and here is what I think about it.
If you really love the person you would not cheat. Period.
If you use the excuse "I didn't want to hurt them" in terms of not wanting to break up when they find out that you're cheating (and they will) it will hurt them more.
If you are cheating you have no respect for the person you are with.
You can use the excuse that you are not getting what you "need" out of the relationship that you are in. If that is the case then you need to reconsider the relationship you are in.
Basically, in a nutshell, that is my opinion on cheating. Take it or leave it.

Writer's Block
I am suffering from crazy writer's block lately. Usually the blog is my stress relief and I guess since I turned 30 I have chosen to not allow myself to be stressed, thus no need to write. There have been some big things (10th anniversary of 9.11.01) that I tried to write about and the words would just not come. This has been happening over and over on both blogs.
In an attempt to remedy this situation I am going to start another blog challenge. That will at least give me something to write about and maybe in a month I'll find something to write about again!

Fall
As I sit down to write this I am looking out my window and watching leaves fall. Yes, it is true fall seems to have arrived. While technically fall does not begin until the 23rd it seems to have arrived in Norman last Sunday. I woke up Sunday morning to go to church and almost had to go back in to get a sweater. Fall had certainly arrived.
To reinforce the coming of fall even more Saturday we came to the conclusion that my pump for the pool had died a sad and pitiful death. I made the (responsible) decision to go ahead and close the pool. So also while I look out my window as I type I see a sad, sad pool with a cover on it. In reality I wouldn't have the time to get it back to clear (lots of algae issues this season) before it was time to really close it. I can have the pump replaced this spring and get it vacuumed and throw in A LOT of chemicals and it will be fine.
The conclusion of the pool season is always sad and this one seems a bit more melancholy. In a little over six months I will open the pool for the 2012 season. In the time that the pool is closed a lot of decisions about my future will be made.
I have a love/hate relationship with this particular season. For the most part the idea of fall makes me giddy, however the reality of it always seems to make me sad. You have football game after football game, fairs, school is back in session, church stuff starts up again full swing, as does Junior League, you enjoy crisp weather, beautiful trees, An Affair of the Heart, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the beginning of hot chocolate weather, and cuddling weather. All of these are things that I LOVE, however they also all tend to revolve around "couple-dom".
I am happy with where I am in my life and I would under no circumstance change it, but it still seems to make me a little sad. The majority of my relationships of the past have seemed to either start or end in the fall, so when the weather turns cold after the drudgery of the summer months I tend to be a bit reflective and kind of sad. Looking back I'm glad for every relationship that has ended, however it does bring back those feelings of intense sadness.
I am still in a mood where I am solely focusing on myself and being the best me I can be to prepare me for the adventure I have planned after graduation in May. When I go through these feelings of melancholy it tends to reinforce that I am right where I am supposed to be and am going right where I need to be.
So even with the mix of happy and sad that I feel during the fall I know that something big is forming just under the surface. I cannot wait to see where I am when I open the pool in March. Big things are coming.
